We cycle beside the Sangke River, which Dean kayaking on the Sangke Riverflows through the center of the city to the hilltop Angkorian temple Phnom Banan and kayak a stretch of the river back to town.

And a city cycling tour to explore Battambang a faded architectural gem that combines French colonial buildings along the riverfront with some of the best preserved traditional Khmer houses in Cambodia.

A resurgence of interest in the city means we have a choice of boutique hotels and absurdly cheap gourmet restaurants to choose from.

The next morning we’ll head into the lush countryside for a ½ hour ride on the bizarre bamboo train, which has to be seen to be believed before our return to Siem Reap or continuing onto Phnom Penh.

The Bamboo Train

The Bamboo Train

An overnight visit staying in a boutique garden hotel.

If time is tight Battambang can be visited in a full day. Cycling alongside the river to Cambodia’s only vinery, where we have a picnic then kayak a stretch of the river back with a pickup to take us to the Bamboo Train, returning to Siem Reap in the evening.
